Options If You Qualify for Health First Colorado

Your family has options for health insurance. Depending on your household income, you may qualify for coverage through Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid Program), Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+), or Connect for Health Colorado®. You can apply for financial help through Connect for Health Colorado to help lower your monthly health insurance premiums.

Following is information about your choices and how to apply. You are also welcome to work with one of our certified experts if you prefer in-person help.

What if I qualify for Health First Colorado or CHP+?

You can still purchase a private health insurance plan. Most individuals who qualify for Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid Program) or Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) also qualify for a health insurance plan through Connect for Health Colorado. However, if you qualify for Health First Colorado or CHP+, you will not qualify for financial help to lower the cost of your health insurance plan through Connect for Health Colorado. You would pay full price for your health insurance plan.

Important!

To qualify for CHP+, you cannot have other health insurance. This means that if you choose to enroll a child in a plan through Connect for Health Colorado, that child will no longer qualify for CHP+.  Parents enrolled through Connect for Health Colorado can enroll children in CHP+ if they are eligible.

Do I need to submit a separate application for Health First Colorado or CHP+?

Connect for Health Colorado and the State of Colorado partner to create a single application for individuals and families.  When you apply, you can see if you qualify for Health First Colorado, CHP+ or financial help through Connect for Health Colorado. After you submit your application, information may be exchanged between the two organizations to make the process easier for you.

  • If you apply through Connect for Health Colorado, we will let you know if you and your family likely qualify for Health First Colorado and/or CHP+, and will send your application to the State of Colorado for a full eligibility determination.
  • If you apply through PEAK (the system used by Health First Colorado), and you or your family likely qualify for financial help to buy private health insurance plan, the State of Colorado will send your application to us. You will need to log into your Connect for Health Colorado account to review your application information and enroll in a private health insurance plan.

After you submit your application, you may receive two separate letters. One will come from the State of Colorado telling you about your eligibility for Health First Colorado or CHP+, and the other will come from Connect for Health Colorado telling you if you qualify for financial help to lower your health insurance costs.

I applied through Connect for Health Colorado and was told my application was sent to the State of Colorado. What’s next?

  • Watch your mail or email. You will get a notification from the State of Colorado with your final eligibility results. They will also send you a letter or email if more information is needed to complete the process.
  • You may also check the results of your application through your PEAK account.
    • If you do not have a PEAK account, you can create one at Colorado.gov/PEAK.
    • You do not need to submit another application through PEAK. The information you provided to Connect for Health Colorado will be sent to the State of Colorado.
    • You can also use PEAK to manage your Health First Colorado or CHP+ benefits, print benefit cards, report changes and more.
